The word ‘candle’ comes from the Latin ‘candere’, which means to be white or to glitter.
The first candles are thought to date back to primitive man, who fabricated rush-lights from dried rushes soaked in animal fats. The Romans advanced the art of candle-making, creating a candle with a wick. For centuries, candles were used as a primary light source – for homes, places of worship and to guide night-time travellers.
Over the years, their practical function has diminished. Instead, they have come to symbolise some of our deepest emotions – joy, sadness, hope, wisdom – and are a feature of almost every celebration around the world.
Now, candles come in every shape, size, colour and fragrance imaginable. They create mood and atmosphere with their warmth, beauty and sparkle. Their infinite variety makes them a wonderful decorative addition to every home.
